He's a wisecracking duck from another universe, she's a drop-dead gorgeous redhead from Cleveland. Not exactly a match made in heaven, would you think? Well, no, but these two stick together like glue. Switzler is absolutely devoted to her Ducky, and Howard - who staunchly believes that people are 'No damned good' - nevertheless has a soft spot for Beverley.
Weyland Smithers and Monty Burns

Smithers: I love you, sir!
Burns: WHAT?
Smithers: I... In those colours! (Aside) Oh, who am I kidding, this was never the right time!
What's the attraction? Burns is nasty, weak, malicious, greedy, stupid, ignorant, sadistic, and ugly to boot; and Weyland Smithers - who knows nuclear physics like other people know, well, old episodes of The Simpsons, and can play a mean ukelele to boot, is absolutely devoted to him. Burns, for his part, neither knows, nor cares.
Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd

This is kind of a hate/love relationship. Normally, the animosity between these two animated characters is intense, but whack Bugs in a frock and put some lipstick on him - and phew, baby! Smell those pheromones!
For his part, Elmer is never less than serious about the whole thing, but Bugs is just in it for the dresses. Tease!
Hi TimT,
ReplyDeleteHoward likes Boobies, nothing else to it.
Smithers and Burns is a Sub/DOm relationship.
Bugs and Elmer was all about pushing the boundries of relationships during the 40's and 50's. It was a political statement, and one that worked at poking fun at the "do gooders" of the time.

It's a little odd, a bird having an attraction to human breasts, but alright ... thanks for the analysis, Rebecca!
ReplyDeleteThinking over it again, the thing that puzzles me about the Howard/Beverley relationship is not actually why Howard likes Beverley - that much is obvious - it's why Beverley goes for Howard, especially considering the crazy shit he gets himself involved in. And yes, damn it, I'm jealous! Drop-dead gorgeous cartoon characters shouldn't fall for unrealistically drawn cartoon ducks!
ReplyDeleteHi TimT,
ReplyDeleteUmmm, not wanting to go into too much detail, as I don't want the sisterhood to lynch me for letting out all of our secrets, but let me just say one word..., "Feathers".
Now if you will excuse me, I have to go and have a private moment.

That brings a whole new level of meaning to the ABC children's song 'feathers, fur, or fins' ...
ReplyDeleteI think I stumbled into a private moment that I never ever wanted to see/hear...
