Theology corner!

Now Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death. - 1 Chronicles 2: 3
Er, just how did Er err? Was Er who erred from Ur? Did Er err in Ur?

Hello Tim. Happy New Year.

Your post reminded me of a peculiar Old Testament story I noted in a book I am very slowly reading. It's Jephthah, who makes a very silly promise to the Lord, and goes through with it (killing his daughter.)

I bet it doesn't often get a mention in Sunday School. (I didn't recall it before either.)

Actually, the Wikipedia entry makes it clear that this at least used to be a familiar story - its gets a mention in Hamlet, and there are many other artistic references to it.

I think Kevin Donnelly should be alerted immediately to make sure it is included in the revised national curriculum!

As something to aspire to? It reminds me of this that I just read, which recommends 'The Others' as one of the '10 best movies to watch with your mom'. Because Nicole Kidman's demented mother, er, represents a role model for mothers everywhere? One shudders at the thought.

And a happy new year to you!
