From Yesterday's Weekend Australian Magazine

Clearly, a caption writer at The Australian doesn't like Phillip Adams...

Nice pick-up Timmy.

He probably doesn't even read The Australian anyway! I think he dictates all his columns to tape and has it written down later, so maybe the staff just like having a go at him from time to time.

I reckon he just mails in a copy of the Age from the 70s or 80s. He recyles his old rubbish shamelessly, and is, in fact, something unique in journalism: the world's first self-plagiarist.

He should sue himself: Phillip vs Adams!

Adams persists in supporting a creed that relies on on its success by forcing the majority of the population into mediocrity.

No creed can be successful without giving its adherents something to aspire to.

Adams' ideology is dead.

Cheers.

The man who used to be the man for the moment!

You'd probably have an obstruction too if you ate a bowl!

At risk of unleashing a storm upon my head:

Obviously the juxtaposition with the headline and the photo is irresistable, but I've always been a little puzzled as to why people hate Philip Adams so much. I can perfectly understand that he may not be your cup of tea, but I'm puzzled as to why he garners such venom. Could you please explain it to me?

Because he is a hatred engineer. I used to read him 25 years ago and feel priveleged that such a great guy shired his thoughts with me in the Weekend Australian; clearly a genius of the Australian Film Industry and a very switched-on guy, though a bit snarky about some politicians.

Then I saw him write about an ordinary person: me. He had found out, damned if I know how, that my penis is too small to satisfy my wife and that's why I like my sport. And the Australian gave him a half-page, and thats a BIG page, to explain the details to everyone.

SInce then I have noticed his output consists mostly of similar stuff: unconstrained hatred of people that he disagrees with. He isn't worth the spit to say what you think of him.

Nah, I don't know either Karen. A while back I used to listen regularly to his Late Night Live, and I don't really have a problem with him - though as you say, the headline/mug shot combination was irresistible!

Adams seems to come from another era, really, when the BBC accents and rounded vowels were quite common, nowadays his ew-so-smooth tones and deliberately 'cultivated' pose probably come across differently.

Life's too short to worry too much about Adams!

Probably because he is such a pompous hypocrite, spewing hate and ridicule at 'aspirational' Australians while he lives in luxury in his Paddo house. Nobody respects a champagne Socialist.

Tim, I don't mind much of Late Night Live either, but I suspect he can do a decent interview sometimes mainly because he has at least a couple of research staff and a budget that (so I have read somewhere) is very disproportionate for the ABC.

But he still irritates me because: his attacks on many politicians are exceedingly personal and nasty; he seems to increasingly like to take credit for taking up various causes before anyone else; he "outed" Graham Kennedy before he was dead; he publicly recounted personal conversations with Alan Jones (after the "London incident") in a way that seemed designed mainly to bring credit on himself while at the same time confirming Alan's homosexuality again; he has written that he will never be able to vote for the Liberals simply on principle (he would like to be able to hand in just a "1 Labor" ballet for the rest of his life,) yet he likes to be thought of as taking politics seriously; he likes to criticise many aspects of capitalism while actually having made his millions through advertising (arguably the least worthy of all aspects of capitalism); a magazine article I read recently claims he keeps pots full of Monte Blanc pens around the house (that's just rich man's wankery); he thinks crude jokes are funny enough to publish collections of them; he remains a sympathiser to idealistic communists who should have known better earlier; he started a 1970's Australian film culture that was extremely hostile to religion and rarely dealt with any serious philosophical issues, an influence that seems to remain to this day; and I strongly suspect that his pleasantness in some interviews is a front that covers nasty things said behind guests back. (That last one is just a feeling - no evidence to back it up.)

There's more where this list has come from - I think Tim Blair must have direct knowledge dirt on him.

His pose is straight out of "The Office", only Ricky Gervais was only pretending to be a complete and utter pretentious twat.

TimT said...

Hmmm, definitely not well liked then!

And I'm certainly using a lot of exclamation marks lately! Aren't I! Yes! I am!

The thing about Late night Live is that the questions are always longer than the answers. Adams uses his guests to tell "the poddies and gladdies" (excuse me while I reach for the sick bag) how wonderful he is. I try to listen when the guests interest me but very rarely can I stomach more then a few minutes of Adams.

Ah yes, the old Egotistic Interviewer Syndrome. He does that.
