Bulstrode Whitelocke was a chap around during the English Civil Wars. And doesn't he have a splendid name! Oddly, he seems to have been a moderating influence at the time, but I just think his name is excellent - it combines both verb and noun together into one, handy package. And it makes for great quotes! I've been thinking some up this morning:
Into the mouth of hell Bulstrode!
Boldly Bulstrode and well!
Bulstrode his horse, Bulstrode it into town!
There's a Bulstrode in the china shop!
What a load of Bulstrode dust!
As you can see, my mind has been moving on weighty matters lately.

Rather interesting Tim. Apparently the chap was born in Fleet Street, London. It's not often anything associated with that locale has been referred to as a "moderating influence".
Purely an accident, I bet.
And of course you must realise this is coming from a person who learnt just about all the history he'll ever know from Larry Gonnick's 'Cartoon History of the Universe'.
He looks like quite a ruff fellow if that picture on Wikipedia is anything to go by.
He'd be positively frilled to hear that!
